If you search for the term "fussy cutting" on Instagram, you'll develop serious fussy cutting envy. An expert fussy cutter can trick even a trained quilter's eye. Look at this Triangle Trifecta block sewn by Jess.

Each of the focus print triangles are actually made up of three half hexagons! But I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here.
Let's start at the basics- what is fussy cutting? The theory behind fussy cutting is that you're selecting a section of your fabric that you want to highlight. Maybe it's a flower, a critter, or a circle, as seen in Hex on the Beach.

As with any project, you have the quilters who take a simple theory and do absolutely magnificent things with it. Like Kathi Shunn, @dartykitepatternco on Instagram. She takes the same portion of fabric in each round of this piece, and look what she created! It's absolutely incredible to see the secondary patterns created while fussy cutting.
If you are starting your first fussy cut project, you might consider trying to grab just a simple shape rather than creating a secondary pattern as above. Maybe there's a cute bee fabric that needs to be turned into hexagons. For that, we recommend our fussy cut finders!
How to use a Fussy Cut Finder
We currently offer about 40 fussy cut finders in different sizes and shapes. Our original was for a one inch honeycomb, and it was made to fit into your pocket/wallet so you could take it to the quilt store! Over time, we've developed more shapes and options so you can choose the best one for your project.
Just like our acrylic templates, our fussy cut finders come with a removable paper backing. So if you want to see how your fussy cut shape pops against a neutral background, you can leave the paper backing on. If you want to visualize the shape within your piece of fabric, you can take the paper off. Remember, these are for auditioning fabric, not cutting!
